Leadership was the theme at this year’s annual Volunteer Recognition Celebration, which showcased the outstanding work displayed by the hospital’s volunteers.
“Our dedicated and exceptional volunteers exemplify leadership by their selfless compassion and commitment to our patients and their families. Your contributions are a key part of what makes BWH one of the nation’s best hospitals,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, to the crowd attending the event in the Bornstein Amphitheater on Tuesday evening.
A key part of the 2004 recognition celebration was honoring Volunteer of the Year, Peter Kijac, systems support specialist, Research Management, and Emergency Department volunteer since 2000. In addition to his full-time work at BWH, Kijac volunteers one evening a week in the ED, participates in training new hospital volunteers, and sat on the ED Advisory Committee as a volunteer representative. “When I was told about this honor, I sat there speechless with a huge smile on my face. I volunteer simply because I enjoy the opportunity to help out,” said Kijac.
Volunteers help carry out BWH’s patient care mission. “What you do reminds us of what our commitment should be. You play an integral role in leading the hospital,” said Cheryl Locke, senior vice president, Human Resources.
The entire league of BWH volunteers was honored with a team award by Kris DeGraw Danna, director, Volunteer and Community Access Services.
